Most of this guide focuses on the classic summer visit — but Yellowstone in winter is an entirely different experience, with its own rules, rewards, and rhythm. No sign-in required.

Most park roads close to regular vehicles from October 31 through mid-December (exact dates vary yearly — check the NPS Operating Dates page).

The only road open to private vehicles all winter is between the North Entrance (Gardiner, MT) and the Northeast Entrance (Cooke City, MT) via Mammoth Hot Springs.

To explore the rest of the park, you'll need:
• A guided snowcoach tour (heated, comfortable)
• A guided or permitted snowmobile tour
• Cross-country skis or snowshoes (for short distances)

Cellular service in Yellowstone is limited and varies by carrier. Cell towers at Mammoth Hot Springs, West Yellowstone, Old Faithful, Grant Village, Lake Village, and Mount Washburn provide service to the park's main developed areas. Verizon generally offers the most reliable service, while AT&T tends to be strongest at Canyon Village.

During busy summer months, high user volume can overwhelm the network — texting is often more reliable than calls.

Cell service and GPS are notoriously unreliable inside Yellowstone — even rangers rely on landmarks and paper maps. If your phone dies or loses signal, these natural reference points can help you reorient.

☀️ Sun-Based Orientation
The simplest method: the sun rises in the East and sets in the West. At local solar noon (~1pm during Daylight Saving Time in summer), the sun is roughly to your South.

Point the 12 on an analog watch at the sun — the midpoint between 12 and the hour hand points South.
